The earliest identifiable culture was that of the neolithic Jōmon, who, from about 10,000 BC, inhabited coastal areas, particularly in eastern Japan. Historians associate them with a distinct style of hand-formed pottery imprinted with twisted cords (Jōmon means 'cord markings').
